Easter Sunday: “How?”

Writer's picture: Michael GullatteMichael Gullatte

A few years ago, I spent some time in Philadelphia in hopes of furthering my career. As I was driving downtown one night, I saw a man get shot in the face right in front of me. His skull opened up, and as he laid lifeless on the ground, his brains leaked out of his head.

I thought to myself, "Wow, this is crazy."

After taking a moment to comprehend what had happened, I continued my quest for a McDonalds.

I didn't think anything of it until a couple of weeks after the event. I was talking to my brother and casually mentioned that I had seen someone get shot in the face right in front of me, and that their skull had opened up. My brother's response was, “I’ve never seen anything like that.” He proceeds to call his wife into the room to explain to her what I had just told him and she says, “I’ve never seen anything like that, either.”

Puzzled by my response to the situation, they both asked me, “How?”

I replied, “What do you mean?”

My brother says, “How can your life not be altered after seeing the blood?”

As disturbing as this event was, the truth is, I carried on with my normal life immediately after. Coming to Christ, I’ve noticed a lot of similarities in the way we treat the blood of Jesus.

We hear, “I want to know more about God, but I’m too busy.”

What about the blood?

“My job takes away the focus from God each day.”

What about the blood?

“I know God wants me to do this, but my family wants me to do that.”

What about the blood?

The truth is, my brother expected my life to change based upon this event, which really had nothing to do with me besides my coincidental presence on the scene. So how can we see the pain and suffering of Jesus, the blood that was spilled on the ground for us, and not have a drastic life change?

After experiencing a traumatic event, no one would expect you to brush it off and go to work the next day. No one would expect you to be “normal” around your family and friends. No one would expect you to have a “normal” life after this kind of encounter.

So the question that arises is — What about the blood of Jesus Christ?

The only way that we can return to our normal lives and not have a drastic life change is if we don’t know about the blood, or we just don't care about it. Once you finish eating chocolate and looking for Easter eggs, actually sit down and think about the Blood. How many of us have experienced the death of a loved one? On the day that the person died, do you celebrate or mourn each year?

"And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?" - Revelation 6:10 KJV

The people who are in heaven cry in remembrance of the blood, so why are we smiling?

Question of the day: Have you become desensitized to the blood of Jesus Christ?
