A few years ago, I remember this dress was trending. Depending on their perspective of it, some people said that the dress was white and gold, others said black and blue. This debate sparked a frenzy on social media because everyone was convinced that their perspective was right.
I’m not sure how the debate ended, or if people simply lost interest, but what I find funny is that the dress is whatever you see from your own perspective. Everyone saw the dress through a different lense — so who is to say who is right and who is wrong?
Oddly enough, a similar debate happens in regard to the spiritual realm as well. Oftentimes, we limit God to our natural circumstances because of our lack of His heavenly perspective. There are many times in the Bible where God had to open someone’s eyes because they weren’t seeing life through His lense.
The truth is, what we see is not all that there is to be seen.
"And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha." - 2 Kings 6:17 KJV
"Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink." - Genesis 21:19 NIV
"Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight." - Luke 24:31 NIV
We have suffocated the anointing of God by putting Him in a box called “reality.”
We see that the growth and development of children stems largely from their environment. If a kid is being raised in the wrong environment, we notice a decrease in their mental and emotional development. Similarly, we have stunted our own spiritual growth by trying to fit God in an environment that He doesn't belong - "reality."
The truth, however, is that the unseen is actually more real than what we see.
Most people saw Jesus dying on the cross as defeat, but the believers and followers of Jesus know that it was victory. To the majority of the world, water is just water. To Jesus, water was actually cement that could be walked upon. To everyone around Lazarus, Lazarus was dead. But to Jesus, Lazarus was just taking a nap.
The truth is, if we spend our lives only making decisions based on what we can see, we are stripping God of His power in our life because He only operates in the unseen.
Helen Keller, who was legally blind, was once asked what could be worse than being blind? She replied: “The only thing worse than being blind is to have sight but no vision.”
"but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” - Hebrews 10:38 NIV
How can we make a spiritual decision to accept Jesus Christ but continue to base everything in our lives on what we can see in the natural? This is what God means when He says that we must walk by faith and not by sight: We must constantly make decisions that don’t make sense to the natural eye, but bring peace to the spirit of Jesus that lives inside of us. If we claim to have accepted Jesus into our heart but still operate based on our natural senses, we must check and see if we have truly accepted Him.
Question of the day: What is your reality — what God says, or are you limited to your circumstances?
